Silver Lions Farms is looking for an experienced and dedicated Farm Manager to join our team in Ely, Nevada. 

Silver Lion Farms is seeking an experienced alfalfa expert to plan and manage the execution of the day-to-day farming operations on our nearly 2400 organic acres to plant, grow, and harvest various crop rotations, including hemp, alfalfa, and trite.  This includes directing and managing all permanent and temporary staff, outsourced resources, and training the field team on various tasks and execution. This is a leadership position that will work directly with the executive team to plan, manage, and lead all farming operations. 

Our ideal candidate has at least 5 years of leadership experience and is an expert in growing alfalfa (organic preferred), plant cycles, field preparation, pivot equipment, and labor management. You will also have experience maintaining work orders and records using AgWorld or similar software and are a deadline-driven, confident, and dependable leader who can work well with their team and executive management to lead farming operations.

Farm Manager Core Duties & Responsibilities 

Field Preparation 

  • Ensure that fields are properly conditioned in the Fall to include required disc’ing/tilling, and nutrient treatments are properly applied
  • Cover crops are planted per the Farm Plan

Planting 

Ensure that preparations are made prior to planting per the Farm Plan: 
  • Seedlings are ready for planting
  • Seed is ready for planting
  • Equipment is ready and in proper condition
Plant fields in the cadence (timing, equipment, and fields) per Farm Plan: 
  • Seedlings
  • Direct seed 

Grow & Field Maintenance 

  • Ensure watering is at a specified water depth of 12 inches or as specified by the Farm Plan
  • Ensuring pivots are maintained and operational
  • Ensure organic weed control is conducted according to the Farm Plan (rotation every 20 days)
  • Ensure soil testing is completed as specified in the Farm Plan
  • Ensure nutrients are applied per the Farm Plan
  • Partners with equipment mechanics manager to ensure maintenance records are maintained and identifies/coordinates repairs

Harvest

  • Ensure that the harvest is conducted per the Farm Plan

Management 

  • Manages, leads, and trains a core team of Farm Laborers
  • Delegates work responsibilities as needed to properly supervise work activities, timelines, and labor staff
  • Coordinates with the Labor Administrator to plan and schedule labor team schedules
  • Ensures adequate staff are present and ready to execute the Farm Plan

Farm Planning 

  • Works with the management team to plan the seasonal field preparation, planting, field maintenance, and harvest and develop the farm plan
  • Labor requirements
  • Farm and labor equipment
  • Crop requirements
  • Maintains daily work orders and records in AgWorld for all farm-related activities (watering schedules, topicals, planting, harvest, labor team’s job assignments, etc.)

Minimum Requirements   

Education and Experience

  • Thorough knowledge of farming, plant cycles, field preparation, pivot equipment, and labor management
  • 5+ years of experience farming, growing and harvesting alfalfa (organic experience preferred)
  • Proficiency in using farm management software 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (MS Teams, Word, Excel, etc.) 
  • 5+ years of farm maintenance experience
  • 8+ years of farm management experience
  • Experience working and managing pivot watering systems and other large-scale farming equipment
  • Knowledge of and experience in current agricultural practices
  • Experience & knowledge of safe equipment operation

Skills & Core Competencies 

  • Leadership: Proven track record of leading, managing, and inspiring a team
  • Strategize: Ability to assess and communicate timelines, efficiency, and risk to crops season
  • Communication: Provide clear, transparent communication with leadership, reporting all changes, issues, and needs to the management team

Additional Requirements  

  • Must pass required background checks
  • Valid driver's license required

Physical Requirements  

  • Must be able to climb, squat, bend, twist, stand for at least 8–10 hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds   
  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
